Plant of the Month : November 2018

Holly

Red Berries of the Holly Tree

Holly is an iconic plant for Christmas decoration. There is a bumper crop of berries this year and they are hanging on well despite the recent cold snap. However, the birds will invariably strip them just before we want to cut and bring some branches indoors to enhance the Christmas spirit.

At the Park we aim to beat our feathery friends to it by harvesting some branches in the second half of November and storing them in a sealed bin liner in a cool place, and hung up out of the reach of mice. Some varieties such as Ilex aquifolia ‘Pyramidalis’ seem not as palatable and remain on the tree till the New Year – you are fortunate if you have one of these.
