Plant of the Month : December 2016
This is the time of year when those plants that have been overshadowed by their showier summer flowering companions, come into their own. Bamboo, which has provided a swaying backdrop for much of the year has a chance to shine, quite literally.
Take a look at some of the yellow stemmed Bamboo, Phyllostachys vivax ‘aureocaulis’, that is planted around the park. In order to display the magnificent golden stems, we thin out the smallest stems in each clump of bamboo and then trim off the side shoots up to a height of 4 or 5 foot. In the low November light the stems positively glow. This a technique that can be used on other Bamboos with attractive stems, such as Phyllostachys nigra, the black stemmed Bamboo.
