Plant of the Month : August 2019
Aechmea fasciata

Otherwise known as the ‘Urn plant’ or ‘Silver Vase Plant, Aechmea fasciata can be seen flowering outdoors during the summer in our Walled Garden by the entrance to our Tropical House.
A native to Brazil, it has bright pink bracts with small purple flowers. The word ‘Aechmea’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘spear tip’. We have lots of different varieties of Aechmea flowering in the Walled Garden at the moment.
One of the more unusual is Aechmea “Blue Rain”, which has a spear-like flower head covered in blue flowers on a red stem. They can be found flowering near the Wrinkled Hornbill in the Walled Garden.
