“We had no idea that you have such wonderful gardens”, is a frequently made comment by visitors to the Park.
Rather than being a Botanical Garden, the horticulture here is perhaps best described as ‘Theatre with Plants’ - aiming to demonstrate the wonder and diversity of the plant kingdom, in the same way that our colleagues aimto show the wonder and diversity of the animal kingdom.
We have developed a wide range of planting styles, many of which link with the animal exhibits and take advantage of our various microclimates.
We use an extensive range of plants in varying styles and combinations to achieve drama, atmosphere and effect.
With the Victorian Manor House at the hub, a large walled garden and a wonderful collection of mature trees form the backbone of our landscape. The planting in and around the animal exhibits is an important part of our work and of course presents its own interesting challenges!
