Key Stage 2
- Our talks and tours take from thirty to forty minutes.
- We like to keep the size of the group to around twenty pupils.
- Whilst many of our talks and tours relate to the National Curriculum, some are designed to enthuse and inspire the children.
You are welcome to select any of our Key Stage 1 tours and talks.
In addition, we offer:
Habitats:
Global habitats: This talk is illustrated using slides and animal artefacts and is given in a classroom rather than in the Park itself. It covers the main global habitats from Polar to Desert.
[KS2:Sc2:1abc,4c,5bc]
Rainforests: Given in the Walled Garden, unless the weather is very wet, this talk uses our range of small primates and parrots to illustrate adaptations shown by animals in all levels of the rainforest, before entering the Tropical House to look for sloths, rainforest birds, insectivorous plants and banana palms.
[KS2:Sc2:1abc,2ae,3ac,4c,5ab]
African Animals: We have a range of African animals and their close relatives easily accessible from one corner of the Park. This tour uses these animals to illustrate adaptations to African habitats and to explain how the keepers look after some larger animals.
[KS2:Sc2:1ac,2abe,4c,5abc]
Birds and Reptiles: We have an extensive range of birds and reptiles. Starting in the Walled Garden, this talk looks at giant hornbills and penguins before walking up to the Reptile House via some of our owls and vultures. Once inside, we examine a range of reptiles including rattlesnakes, crocodiles and very large boa constrictors.
[KS2:Sc2:1ac,2abe,4c,5abc]
Minibeasts: Using keys, live animals, preserved specimens and pictures, this session introduces pupils to the world of the invertebrates (this session has a maximum pupil number of 16).
[KS2:Sc2:2e,4abc,5abd]
Endangered Animals and Zoos: Animal artefacts, such as teeth and skins, are used to show why conservation of endangered species is important and how a modern zoo can help save endangered species (this is an indoor sessions in our rainforest themed classroom).
[KS2:Sc2:5abc]
How Animals Feed: Using our collection of teeth and skulls, we look at the size and shape of an animal’s teeth and how these are adapted to their food and feeding methods (this is an indoor session in our rainforest themed classroom).
