Red Handed Tamarin Enrichment July 2009 - Cardboard Tube Feeders

Above shows one of our red- handed tamarins trying to get into the cardboard tube feeders. This is a simple device which keeps the tamarins occupied for usually over an hour. It is a kitchen roll cardboard tube and all we have done is put a few holes around it, filled it with some crickets and folded the ends over. They then have to try and open the tube to retrieve the crickets, which are one of their favourite foods.

It stimulates them both in mind and body, as they have to figure out how to get the crickets and actually manipulate the cardboard to get them out. They usually spend a while rolling and moving the tubes around before figuring it out and opening the ends to get the crickets. This enrichment is usually done 2-3 times a month.
