Red-legged Seriema

IUCN Status: Least concern
Size:Length; 90cm. Weight; 1.5kg.
Habitat and Distribution: Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. Open woodland, thorny scrub, savanna and ranchland.
Groups and Breeding:Nest in a structure of sticks and twigs lined with leaves, on the branches of trees. Lay 2 eggs which are incubated for around 30 days.
Diet: Insects, reptiles, rodents, grains and fruit.
- Two species make up the family Cariamidae (seriemas).
- A seriema’s call can be heard several kilometres away.
- They are fast runners and when chased can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometres an hour.
- They tend to fly only to reach roost sites or to avoid obstacles.
