- The Oxford Sandy and Black is one of Britain’s oldest pig breeds, thought to have existed for 200-300 years.
- Alternative names for this pig are ‘Plum Pudding’ or ‘Oxford Forest Pig’.
- Pigs have 44 teeth.
- Pigs do not have functional sweat glands, so cool themselves using water or mud during hot weather. They also use mud as a form of sunscreen and to provide protection against flies and parasites.
- In 1976 there was only a single sow of this pig breed left and the British Pig Association recognises this as a ‘rare breed’.
- Pigs were first domesticated 2500-3000 years ago.
