IUCN Status: Not listed although in 1978 it was reported that only 50 remained in New Zealand, so it does constitute a ‘rare breed’
Size: Height; 60 cm. Weight; 63-100 kg.
Habitat and Distribution: The modern Kune kune Pig comes from New Zealand.
Age: 15 years.
Groups and Breeding: In They have between 3-14 piglets, after a gestation period of 112-116 days.
Diet: Omnivorous but mostly eat grass fruit and vegetation.

- The Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) is the wild ancestor of the domestic pig.
- ‘Kune-Kune’ in Maori means very fat and very round.
- Although the modern kune kune comes from New Zealand, they do not originate there. A number of theories exist as to where they do originate, such as Polynesia or even from whaler boats.
- Kune kune Pigs have only been kept in the UK since 1992.
- The tassels found under their chin are known as ‘piri-piri’.
