Speckled Mousebird
Colius striatus

IUCN Status: Least Concern.
Size: Length; 36cm. Weight; 55g
Habitat and Distribution: Southern Africa. Forest edges and clearings, open woodland and dense scrub.
Age: In captivity up to 12 years
Groups and Breeding: Nest in trees in a large open bowl made up of twigs, leaves, cobwebs, and lichen. Lay up to 3 eggs which are incubated by both birds for a period of around 11 days.
Diet: Mostly fruit, also flowers, buds and nectar.
- One of the six species which make up the family Coliidae (mousebirds).
- Very social birds living in family groups of usually around 8 birds.
- When at roost, the family group will huddle together very closely.
- They have very flexible feet and can turn all four toes forwards, which gives them extra agility; they can even eat hanging upside-down!
