IUCN Status: Least concern.
Size: Length; 63cm. Weight; 1600g.
Habitat and distribution: Mostly open country also forest edges in Africa.
Breeding: Males will mate with several females. Females nest in a scrape on the ground lined with grass and feathers. Lay up to 12 eggs which are incubated for around 28 days by the female.
Diet: Seeds, roots, berries, roots, flowers and insects.
- Six separate species make up the family Numididae (guineafowl).
- This family is endemic to Africa.
- The bare skin around the head and neck of these birds help to control their body temperature.
- These birds will generally only fly to escape predators or when they go to roost at night.
- Highly gregarious, Helmeted Guineafowl can be found in groups of up to 200 birds.
