IUCN Status: Listed on the New Zealand Rare Breeds register.

Size: Smaller than modern milking breeds.

Habitat and distribution: Arapawa island in New Zealand.

Groups and breeding: These goats have two or three kids every other year unless they lose a kid.

Diet: Leaves and some plants.

 

  • Arapawa Goats are thought to be descendants of animals brought on the first ships to visit New Zealand..
  • These goats are probably descendents of the ‘Olde English Milche Goat' from Britain.
  • The Arapawa Goat can jump nearly 2 metres.
  • These are a rare breed and even more threatened as they live only on one island and are being destroyed by the New Zealand Forestry Service as they may threaten a rare snail also found on the island.
