White-naped Crane
Grus vipio

IUCN Status: Vulnerable.

Captive Management Level: EEP

 Size: Height; 125cm. Weight; 5.6kg.

Age: Up to 45 years.

Habitat and distribution: This crane is found in wet forests, marshes and reed beds on the border of Russia, Mongolia and China as well as areas of North and South Korea and southern Japan.

Groups and breeding:  These cranes gather in large flocks at breeding times. They mate with the same partner each year and re-establish bonds with a complicated call display. They build a nest of dried sedges and grass in open wetlands, amongst dense vegetation, although if enough vegetation is not available they often do not find adequate cover for the nest. One or two eggs are laid which hatch after 30 days. During this time the parents vigilantly defend the nest. Young fledge after 70-75 days.

Diet: Insects, small vertebrates, and the seeds, roots and tubers of wetland plants.

  • Agricultural expansion and fires are threatening the habitats and breeding sites of these birds.
  • These cranes can travel up to 3km from the nest and spend up to 80% of the daylight hours looking for food.
