IUCN Status: Least concern.

 

Size: Length; 36cm. Weight; 140g.

Habitat and distribution: Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. Scrub woodlands to coastal dunes.

Breeding: Sometimes lays eggs in nests of other bird species. Generally nest on an open platform of sticks, high up in trees. Several females will lay eggs in the same nest, with up to 10 eggs being laid in one nest. The incubation period lasts for around 15 days, and chicks fledge at around 15 days old.

Diet: Insects, frogs, eggs and nestlings of small birds.

 

  • 136 species make up the family Cuculidae (cuckoos).
  • The Guira Cuckoo is also known as the White Ani.
  • It is one of the most common birds of Brazil
  • They have zygodactyle toes; the inner and outer toes point backwards and the other two toes point forward.
