The name 'White' Rhino is a corruption of the Afrikaans word 'weit', which means 'wide', a reference to its wide mouth. There are two sub-species of White Rhino, the southern and northern races. The northern is the rarest rhino, taxon numbering only 25 in the wild and 9 in captivity. The rarest Rhino species is the Javan which numbers only a hundred in the wild and none in captivity. The most spectacular decline in recent years has been suffered by the Black Rhino in Africa, down from 60,000 in 1970 to approximately 2,600 today, due to poaching for its 'valuable' horn.
