Normally found in groups of around 10 individuals, one group of 50 has been observed in the wild. One individual at San Diego zoo lived to over 15 years, the normal lifespan is around 10 years.

Slender-Tailed Meerkats Slender-Tailed Meerkats

Lives in family units of about ten individuals. They have very long fore-claws which are used for digging for insects and excavating their burrows. They are active during the early morning and evening, spending the rest of the time sun-basking and sleeping. One individual will always act as sentry on the look-out for predators, usually viewing from the highest bush or rock in the area. A typical sight of the meerkat is when they stand erect using their tail as a rest, like a tripod.

Banded Mongoose Banded Mongoose

A nomadic species which seldom stays in one area for more than a day or two. Packs of 10 - 100 have been recorded. Whether moving about or at rest, Banded Mongooses are inclined to be very vocal, producing a variety of chattering and grunting sounds. They are active by day, investigating and sharing in any special food discovery. They chiefly eat insects, centipedes and snails but also mice, small reptiles, eggs and young of ground-nesting birds plus fruits and berries.
